Bishop's Bog Preserve

Bishop’s Bog Preserve is another natural treasure of the City of Portage. This 152-acre preserve is the largest "relict" bog in Southern Michigan and is registered with the Nature Conservancy. Ancient and untouched, it is home to several rare plant species, including the Orange Fringed Orchid and Stemless Pink Ladyslipper.

A "floating" dock trail is a unique way to connect Bishop's Bog Preserve and Schrier Park, allowing for passive nature study without disturbing this truly unique environment.  Wear rubber boots or go barefoot on the dock trail, but be sure you make time for this natural treasure to reveal its secrets.
To increase your appreciation for this unique resource, download a pdf copy of "Watching for Wildlife at Bishop's Bog Preserve," a trail guide published by the Kalamazoo Nature Center or you may wish to download a Portage South/Central Greenway map showing how Bishop's Bog is connected to several other fragile ecosystems in south Portage. If this looks interesting to you, you might also want to learn more about the other nature preserves of Portage.
